Eastwood/Cornerstone Schools Robot Team

Boosting Engineering, Science, and Technology (BEST) is a middle and high school robotics competition whose mission is to engage students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) disciplines and inspire them to pursue STEM careers. Students work in a real-world engineering environment to design, build, and test a robot while running their own “company.” Participants in BEST commit to an intensive eight-week program where students compete with their robot, give presentations, build a team exhibit, and document everything in an engineering notebook. BEST teams are given all the materials they can use and need to build their robot. Students competing in the BEST program have a sense of pride in their accomplishments while at the same time having a lot of fun. More importantly, students learn a great deal about engineering, problem solving, leadership, teamwork, public speaking, and working effectively with other people.

General Engineering And Robotics Specialists (GEARS) is a team made up of middle and high school students from several schools and homeschools in the Montgomery, AL area. The team desires to learn not only educational lessons but also life lessons such as teamwork, leadership, and problem solving. The end goal of the team is to glorify God in everything they do as exemplified in their team verse, Colossians 3:23: “Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men.”

See key areas of the competition below

Robot Design & Construction

Brainstorm, design, build and operate a robot on game day 8 weeks after recieving the requirements and materials for this year’s game. During the course of the competition period, complete a Critical Design Review (CDR) and an Engineering Notebook.

Marketing

Market the robot and team by creating a Team Exhibit, Marketing Presentation, themed T-shirt, website, marketing video and by participating in public events such as demonstrations highlighting the capabilities of the built robot.

Spirit & Sportsmanship

Demonstrate good spirit and sportsmanship by showing enthusiasm throughout the competition; supporting, encouraging, and helping other teams; and by exemplifying the proper attitude when winning and losing.

Robot Team Activities

In addition to robot design & construction, marketing, and sprit & sportsmanship activities, the Eastwood/Cornerstone Robotics team also competes in the B.E.S.T. Robotics Competition by completing the following engineering and marketing activities.

Simulink Programming

Effectively apply MathWorks Matlab Simulink in the programming of the robot.

Autonomous Programming

Create autonomous programs which respond, react, and run independently with no direct human control.

Engineering Drawings (CAD)

Create industry standard drawings for the robot design using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software.

Robot Modeling

Model robot design in a 3D virtual environment and demo functionality with simulation and animation.

Team Website Design

Demonstrate website design knowledge and capabilities by creating a website from scratch.

Marketing Video Production

Demonstrate video design knowledge and capabilities by creating and editing a custom video.

Themed T-shirt Design

Design and produce an original game-specific T-shirt to encourage team spirit on game day.

Game Day Givaways

Design and produce team and game themed giveaways for distribution in the team exhibit.
